Top Shopping

Bloomingdale's, 1000 3rd Ave. (entrances on 3rd and Lexington Aves. betw. E59th and E60th Sts.) Buy anything, anything at all, however inexpensive and take the receipt to the Visitor Center. Show your NYCard and you'll get a free gift that's actually worth having. Our favorite is the smoothly designed 'b' key ring (it works just as well as a 'p' or a 'd') which could easily (over Elsa Peretti's dead body) have come from Tiffany's with the appropriate price tag.

J&R Music and Computer World, 31 Park Row (betw. Ann and Beekman Sts.) Tel: 212-238-9100. Just about every New Yorker has bought something from this row of shops right across from City Hall. Everyone knows it, and everyone trusts it - important when you're laying out hundreds or even thousands for the latest computer, camera, plasma screen, DVD player, etc. The store has a truly enormous selection and despite its size is still family run. But what really touches the bristly kernel of a New Yorker's heart is that J&R has some of the best prices in town. NYCard holders get an even better deal with $10 off any purchase over $100

Restaurants on the NYCard

Cowgirl, 519 Hudson Street (at W.10th Street) Tel: 212-633-1133
Formerly Cowgirl Hall of Fame, this place has been around a long time. It’s not only inexpensive, it’s cram-packed with a huge range of New Yorkers, from gays to families. The theme is Southwestern: lots of wood and posters of women cowboys, Americana like catfish sandwiches and corn fritters. A lot of fun, a lot to see, a great night out. 10% NYCard discount.

Grange Hall, 50 Commerce Street (at Barrow Street) 212-924-5246.
A very successful, bustly place, located on one of the prettiest corners in the West Village. Inexpensive, unpretentious. Large helpings of American food. Like Cowgirl, a lot of fun. 10% NYCard discount.

aKa, 49 Clinton Street (betw. Rivington and Stanton Streets) 212-979-6096.
Located in the heart of the working-class (though also increasingly hip) Lower East Side in a former dress shop. Everything about this café is small but very well formed. The décor is modern; the shoe box kitchen turns out inventive and really tasty dishes (try the open faced lamb tongue sandwich with almond butter and red currant jelly for 8 bucks). No single dish over $13 (most for a lot less). 10% NYCard discount.

Alias, 76 Clinton Street (at Rivington Street) 212-505-5011.
Just down the street from aKa, this place is a touch more “evening” — lower lighting, tablecloths, small but serious wine list — without sacrificing its funky, laid-back clients and staff. Chef Scott Ehrlich turns out some pretty big tastes from his mini kitchen but at far less than midtown pricing. 10% NYCard discount.

Koodo Sushi,129 Front Street, lower level Seaport Suites Hotel (betw. Pine and Wall Streets) 212-425-2890.
This place doesn’t look like much, but it’s brand new and has one of the best sushi chefs in town. The fish is impeccable, but the chef really shines in his daily specials (glistening, ultra-fresh sea scallop sashimi, for example, or an inventive oyster roll). Ask hostess Michelle’s advice on these off-menu delights. 10% NYCard discount at dinner.
