Navigating Manhattan is simple as long as you understand the grid, the transit system and have a good map or two. (Our NYMap is the best for street and sight location. The MTA's bus and subway maps are in NYPages with full-size MTA editions available free from subway stations.) The reach of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s subway and bus system is quite extensive and can shuttle you to within a few blocks of any destination on the island. For more private travel one can hail a taxi or rent a limousine.

Buses are in fact a wonderful method of touring New York. Just remember these three rules: 1) don’t be in a hurry; 2) have the exact fare ($2.00) in coins, or a subway token/MetroCard; and 3) if you use coins or a token, ask the driver for a “transfer” when you change to another bus during the same journey. Some buses make limited stops. Don’t be afraid to ask the driver whether he’s going where you are.
